Telecom Italia

Telecom Italia is the incumbent operator in Italy and one of the main ICT international groups. The company wide range offer includes a comprehensive variety voice and data services for business and residential customers, spanning the entire advanced communications services chain - fixed and mobile telephony, the internet and media, information technology, and innovative business solutions and systems.
Telecom Italia is Italy's consolidated market leader and a top player on the international fixed and mobile telephony market. Telecom Italia strategy for network and service evolution is based on its IP Multi-Service Backbone network (the OPB, Optical Packet Backbone), with the following goals:

  • To unify transport networks, freezing and smoothly replacing the existing ones
  • To enhance current voice/data services and provide new multimedia applications
  • To undertake a path towards Next Generation Networks.

In order to realize its strategy Telecom Italia has accomplished two main projects: the Multi-service National Backbone (BBN) and the Multi-service Pan-European Backbone (PEB) (see Telecom Italia Sparkle).
Telecom Italia is now operating in many different areas to maintain its leadership, like new broadband access technologies deployment (ADSL2+), IPTV diffusion and UMTS expansion. Telecom Italia winning proposition is convergence, in terms of:

  • Voice, data and video over IP: triple play, quadruple play
  • Multimode devices
  • VAS Converged platforms (e.g. fixed-mobile videocall)

In order to facilitate and accelerate the fixed-mobile convergence process, during 2005 Telecom Italia merged with TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), TI Group company devoted to mobile communication and services for residential and business customers. Telecom Italia Mobile is the first European operator for number of GSM subscribers on the same network and is leader on the Italian Telecommunications market.

Italtel solutions for Telecom Italia

Italtel activities for Telecom Italia span from the deployment of innovative NGN solutions, to System Integration activities, like Next Generation Data Networks, IP security and OSS/BSS for VAS.
As far as Italtel NGN solutions and NGS solutions catalogue is concerned, three different groups of solutions have been successfully delivered to Telecom Italia:

System Integration

Italtel has been selected by Telecom Italia also to carry out all its main data networks, from the Optical Packet Backbone (OPB), the IP-MPLS backbone that carries all kind of traffic, both data and voice; to the ATM and Frame Relay public networks and to the Gigabit Ethernet access network. This activity consists of the end to end system integration of 3rd party equipment, from CPEs (Customer Premises Equipment) to the access/transport layer, from the applications to management/OSS (Operation Support System) platforms.
Italtel has designed, developed and integrated for Telecom Italia OSS VAS solutions such as Service Delivery/Provisioning, Service Activation and Service Assurance to perform Value Added Services. Moreover, Italtel provides Telecom Italia with qualified professional services for Network Support and Maintenance, Network Inventory and Network Planning, Trouble Management and Service Configuration
