SUCCESS STORIES

Eni Group

Eni Group, a leading company in the energy sector, has officially launched and deployed the Corporate VoIP 2.0 Network, one of the world's biggest networks in terms of size, performance, and technologies used. In fact, Eni VoIP 2.0, natural evolution of the VoIP networks previously deployed, interconnects today over 100 Eni sites in the world and offers over 8,000 employees advanced and integrated communications services: for example, video communication for the cost of a simple phone call; fixed/mobile convergence services and support for dual mode devices (Wifi and GSM/UMTS) offered to users at some Eni sites; integrated voice, fax, and video messages in email (Unified Messaging); click.-to-dial on the Eni VoIP 2.0 Portal to call someone without having to dial their telephone number.

Italtel Solution

Eni Group has selected three partners in the design and development of the Eni VoIP 2.0 Network: Italtel, the supplier and system integrator of the Softswitch platform and its services; Cisco Systems, Italtel's strategic partner, who developed the ToIP services and the Unified Communication network; and BT Italia, one of the biggest providers in Italy of voice and data communications services, fixed and mobile, in the role of Project Management and System Integrator. Eni has a VoIP network of considerable size and with worldwide connections, which uses a range of transport technologies and is strongly integrated with the IT component, making many innovative services available.

The core of Eni's company VoIP network is the Italtel i-SSW platform, which currently connects:

  • Fourteen Call Manager Clusters, private telephone exchanges created by Cisco Systems for managing telephony over IP for enterprise and geographically
  • Two Session Border Controllers, front-end systems with the external IP networks that ensure the security of connections via controlling multimedia traffic, right at the border between the Eni network and the IP network of the Service Provider
  • Two interconnections with the BT Italia network: one for connection with TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) at 2 Mb/s, the other is IP with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

In particular, the i-SSW platform connects and manages two innovative applications that are specific to Eni.

  • The Italtel Softswitch is interconnected with an application server for managing and profiling fixed/mobile convergence services, in order to be able to reach the Eni user wherever they are in the company's worldwide network, via wireless or wireline methods according to the terminal they have access to at that time
  • The i-SSW platform is also equipped with a specific Business Intelligence software application that gives an updated report, which is always available on the Eni VoIP 2.0 portal, of performance indicators on the type of traffic and on the effective usage of the network.
