du, the second national licensed and the first integrated telecommunications operator in the United Arab Emirates, has assigned the project for its international VoIP network infrastructure to Italtel and Cisco Systems. The deal is Italtel’s first contract in the Middle East, an area which is witnessing an impressive expansion and in which the Company will operate from its office in Dubai.
Milan, May 31, 2006 – du, a UAE-based service provider, has awarded Italtel, a leader in the development and integration of products and services for Internet Protocol Next-Generation Networks (IP NGN), and Cisco Systems the tender for the implementation of a network solution based on VoIP technology from Italtel and Cisco. Through this solution, du will be able to use a convergent infrastructure for voice traffic over IP, leading to the possibility of lower operating costs and an optimisation of its investments.
The new system offers du a turn-key solution that includes installation, configuration and integration with the current operating systems of the operator, in addition to after-sales support.
du chief executive officer Osman Sultan said: ”The company’s strategy is focused on providing truly integrated communications solutions that include voice, data, and video content over fixed and mobile networks to individuals and corporations alike. We want to ensure that the services we provide are up to the highest world standard and chose Italtel because we are confident that its technological excellence and international experience will enable du to better adhere to its strategy.”
Mauro Righetti, chief executive officer of Italtel, had this to say about the agreement: “We are especially proud of working with du and offering our technological know-how, cutting edge solutions, and acquired experience in dealing with numerous operators and international service providers.”
The solution to be implemented is one of the applications included in the offer package, developed by Italtel in conjunction with Cisco and known as NGN for PSTN Transformation, which allows the evolution through a smooth migration from traditional PSTN towards NGN based on IP and preserving all the existing services.
More specifically, the solution consists of an international gateway for interconnection of the operator with the national telephone network and with international providers adopting both TDM and IP technologies.
The du solution features the coexistence of technological elements of both companies, creating an infrastructure consisting of Points of Presence based on the Cisco Media Gateway integrated with Italtel’s Softswitch i-SSW. In order to ensure maximum reliability the solution implemented will also include redundancy features at Softswitch level, thus allowing full service continuity. Du's new infrastructure will be based on an open, scalable architecture able to evolve according to the most modern market standards; by taking advantage of the high scalability, flexibility and rich features provided by this agreement, du will be able to introduce advanced services for its customers, including VoIP on broadband access for residential customers and managed telephony over IP services for business customers.
