Milan, October 20, 2009 - Italtel hosted the progress meeting of ISBUL, the R&D programme addressing 'Broadband and Ultra-Broadband Infrastructures and Services' run by the Study, Research and Training Department of the Italian Communications Authority (AGCOM) in association with some of the leading universities in Italy and abroad: the Bocconi University of Milan, the LUISS of Rome, 'Federico II' University of Naples, the 'Sapienza', 'Tor Vergata' and 'Roma Tre' Universities of Rome, the University of Siena, the Politecnico of Milan, the Politecnico of Turin, and Imperial College in London.
The meeting was held at Italtel’s i-Comm Centre in Settimo Milanese, near Milan. Italtel Communication Center (i-Comm Center) is the area to show live demos of the new generation applications, services, and networks to Italtel potential customers and ICT operators. For the ISBUL meeting, in this demo hi-tech area videoconferencing links were set up with the AGCOM offices in Rome and Naples.
Welcoming those present, Italtel CEO Umberto de Julio noted that the development of new Broadband and Ultra-Broadband Network infrastructures is an essential factor in promoting economic growth and competitiveness: 'Italy needs to make long-term infrastructural investments as soon as possible. The return on these investments are measurable not only in monetary terms, but also in terms of social
advancement, increased competitiveness of all productive sectors, an essential contribution to creating human capital, and restored efficiency of public administration. Against this background,' continued de Julio, 'the ISBUL programme assumes enormous importance since it aims to lay the foundations for a permanent agency to address technological, legislative and economic issues relating to the infrastructural aspects of new networks.'
Fulvio Ananasso, who is AGCOM Director of Studies, Research and Training as well as responsible for ISBUL Program, appreciated the opportunity offered by Italtel to host the ISBUL group, emphasizing the importance of the collaboration between institutions and private companies on research projects and wishing a more consistent connection between all stakeholders involved. He also anticipated the
guidelines of Phase 2 of ISBUL Program for 2010, which will shortly be revised for approval by AGCOM Board.
The ISBUL programme is divided into three projects (Technological, Economic, and Legal) and 14 subprojects (or Work Packages) which will be completed in 2009 with the aim of laying the foundations for a permanent agency of the Authority to address the technological, legislative and economic issues relating to the infrastructural aspects of broadband and ultra-broadband new generation networks (NGN), and to promote the development of high-speed and ultra-high-speed electronic communications to the advantage of the whole community.
During the meeting the status of activities of the three projects was analysed, in view of drafting the final document containing the results of the programme.
