Collaboration At Work

Scenario

Globalization is imposing great changes on the world of work. To enable competitiveness to increase, the nature of a company must move towards greater organizational and logistic flexibility. The adoption of Collaboration solutions favors the improvement of interpersonal and group communication; guarantees each employee the possibility to access company data and applications at any time or place; and enables efficient methods of external stakeholder relationship management, starting with clients and suppliers.
The choice of the best solutions available on the market often means that various types of technologies coexist within a company. Innovative solutions are often built on standards which are not widely recognized, thus hindering interoperability.
Italtel proposes Collaboration At Work, an integrated architecture which helps businesses to solve interoperability problems, giving the various involved vendors a precise role and guaranteeing a unified and ergonomic user experience. The architecture also allows businesses to manage the convergence on IP technology, considering the hypothesis of starting
with the replacement of the traditional PBX, then with the migration of the interconnection with the Service Provider to IP technology and finally widening the company’s operative and functional boundaries, including parts of its eco-system (industrial district, supply chain, contact center, temporary collaborators, etc.).

Benefits

The unified user experience, guaranteed by Collaboration At Work, allows a company to improve and speed up its business processes, increasing individual and group productivity, supporting employee mobility, and optimizing the use of video communication and multi-media conferences, with further positive effects in terms of reduced travel and transfer costs. Abandoning TDM technology and moving voice, data and video onto a convergent IP network leads to significant cost management. The implementation of an IP connection towards the Operator leads to notable economic and operative advantages. The saving, in terms of overall costs of Telecommunication services, compared to traditional solutions, is around 30%-50%.

WebRTC technology allows a company to make and receive audio and video calls and to take advantage of a wide set of collaboration and conference services directly from the browser, without having to install a software client. The architecture Collaboration At Work allows businesses to best face the demands of Collaboration with external stakeholders, that are part of its eco-system, thus increasing business efficacy.

Possible savings represent the first form of incentive and financing, thus activating a virtuous circle. The architecture Collaboration At Work allows companies to maximize flexibility and scalability over time.
In planning and creating Collaboration At Work, Italtel called on its numerous strong points: its ability to create products for the completion of market off-the-shelf solutions, its solid partnerships with the main sector vendors, the presence of numerous qualified technicians, and huge test plants for monitoring and testing network services.

Technical description

In the first solution derived from Italtel’s Collaboration At Work architectural framework, Cisco’s technology provides all the traditional IP-BPX services, with the addition of video communication, while Microsoft Lync platform manages all the services available for desktop (PC) and mobile devices (tablets, smartphones), including the management of voice and video calls. In defining the solution, particular attention was paid to all aspects regarding the unified user experience of those who, using Cisco’s IP phone or Lync’s client, access the various services available. Furthermore, the solution guarantees full availability of the services offered by each vendor in their own area.
In this solution, Cisco’s IP-PBX works with Microsoft Lync in SIP. This is guaranteed by the use of NetMatch-S, Italtel’s Session Border Controller (SBC). The use of NetMatch-S as a neutral element for the normalization of SIP protocol also enables the implementation of an IP connection towards the Operator instead of the traditional TDM connection. NetMatch-S is able to solve any signaling or interoperability problems between the business and the Operator, guaranteeing quality of service and security compliance.
The solution is enriched by WebRTC services, provided by Italtel’s product Embrace. Embrace enables an extensive set of real-time communication applications: audio/video calls via the Web, connection with the contact center, audio/video conferences (without MCU), instant messaging, presence, file and desktop sharing. WebRTC users are able to communicate and collaborate with users managed by Cisco and Microsoft technologies.
