CHALLENGE

Proximus is a leading national provider of telephony, internet, television and network-based ICT services, operating in the Belgian and international markets.
Proximus puts the customer at the heart of everything it does, taking particular care of the quality of the customer experience. The attention to the technological renovation of its infrastructure is one of the main elements to ensure it.

MANTRA PROGRAM
Mantra (Migration and Network Transformation), the recent decommisioning program, is a clear example.
The driver behind the decommissioning program was to replace the aging technology (EWSD and S12) with an IMS solution. Proximus was asking for a partner who could deliver a solution with end to end accountability on the program.
Decommissioning a telecommunication network is more than a mere technological exercise.
Besides migrating customers and outphasing switches there is a human dimension consisting of a generation of Proximus employees who built up their professional life on the technology being outphased. Thus, this kind of program cannot be executed only by a subcontractor leading and coordinating the activities. Certainly the capabilities and experience of Italtel were requested, however to succeed an additional ingredient was needed.

CONCLUSIONS

Going back to the beginning of 2015,Frank Vermaerke, Program Manager of Switching outphasing from Proximus stated: « the outphasing of a legacy switching platform represents a huge coordination challenge as besides an extensive organisation for handling the big volumes to migrate also an extensive organisation of experts is required to cope with the special cases. This because every single line counts to close down a switch« .
In the switching outphasing program, Italtel is sitting in the driver’s seat with an end to end accountability on the program. Frank Vermaerke summarizes the contribution of Italtel as: Thanks to the extensive knowledge in the domain and experience in similar projects, Italtel was a decisive factor in the success of the Mantra SO program« .
