DAS ROUTING

CHALLENGE

A Global Service Provider operating in Germany needed a converged IMS-based voice solution for all its fixed and mobile networks.

In the path to be a leading digital telecommunications company, the Service Provider needed to migrate the legacy TDM network to an all-IP solution and then integrate it to the existing networks in order to perform a valuable calls routing.

The Service Provider considered the introduction of a new Interconnection and Routing platform as a powerful way for network consolidation and simplification. The purpose was to move the routing functions from the existing fixed and mobile networks to a centralized SIP Routing Server.

Routing and Policy Server for a multi-context network

SOLUTION

Italtel Routing and Policy Server i-RPS provides an effective response to the issues of massive routing in scenarios of new generation IP-based traffic.

Thanks to i-RPS, the Service Provider overcomes fragmentary and meshed approaches building an optimized transit layer in heterogeneous network domains (NGN, IMS, PSTN, PLMN).

The first goal of the Service Provider was the replacement of Cisco PGW-based Class 4 Platform in the fixed network.

Italtel supported the migration of all interfaces, traffic and services from the Cisco PGW Softswitch towards the new Routing Server i-RPS. For this reason, i-RPS has been integrated with the fixed network environment, previously provided by Italtel.

i-RPS enables new services and business opportunities, thanks to Number Portability and centralized Emergency Calls management.
It provides multi-homing ensuring local high availability and geographical redundancy

1
Up to 500.000 sessions and 5.000 call per second
2
More than 700 domains configured
3
80 Millions of CDR per day
4
10 Millions of DB records for Emergency Calls

BENEFITS

OPEX AND CAPEX REDUCTION
  • Single point of provisioning for the traffic routing among different networks, allowing centralized managed policy and routing databases without the need to apply changes in all the different network nodes
  • Real-time routing updates with easy and faster network routing modification and roll out of new services
  • Access to a single system featuring at the same time multi-protocol access, Number Portability DataBase, Emergency Calls DataBase and service brokering
  • Easy to insert new interconnections, allowing a simple migration path from TDM to IP and to dismiss legacy equipments also with a significant operative cost saving
  • Complete support of the very complex routing functionality (e.g. overlap, dialing and numbering plans, various business needs, originating carrier and trunk groups, charges, codecs, digits, NOA)
ADAPTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY
  • The centralized function capable of collecting and computing the network data, providing routing and policies based on the Service Provider’s requirements, allows time-to-market differentiating services necessary to lead the communications market
  • No need to validate in-switch equipment (including SBCs) for any routing evolution
  • Complete control of calls avoids the presence of SBCs for traffic between different networks
FUTURE PROOF APPROACH
  • Powerful number analysis and routing capabilities combined with complex service logics allow to easily follow the evolution on both commercial and regulatory sides
  • Evolution to a dedicated IP-IP interconnection infrastructure with National and International Operators
FLEXIBILITY AND SCALABILITY
  • Single point of access to the overall routing, traffic engineering and policy management
  • Centralized routing configuration throughout the network
  • Choice of the most cost-effective traffic routes (and relevant daily changes) for long distance interconnection and wholesale traffic
  • Traffic routing optimization inside the network
  • Support of all the protocol stacks and features, allowing the control of the previous installed systems to guarantee a smooth migration of a multi-technology network towards a homogeneous IMS one.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

i-RPS is deployed on virtualized environment using Cisco UCS hardware as physical environment with VMWare hypervisor.

i-RPS acts as:

  • Centralized routing node
  • Number Portability DataBase
  • Emergency call DataBase

Among the several signalling protocols and contexts, in this deployment i-RPS mainly supports the SIP based subscribers and interconnect environment and it interworks with the legacy TDM environment.

To complete the Centralized Routing solution, Italtel also provided the Element Manager i-NEM on the same virtualized platform. i-NEM is a multi-network element manager and it is able to manage the MGCF as well.

In details, Italtel installed two i-RPS nodes in two different regions, in dual-homing configuration with a single point of provisioning of a Centralized Routing Solution to manage these scenarios:

  • SIP proxy interconnections towards all platforms acting as SIP gateway, through SBCs with OLOs and direct with legacy, IMS/VoLTE and Mobile network
  • INAP connection to legacy platforms to provide homogenous routing policy.

Italtel, thanks to its own experience in communication networks, helps the service providers to have an immediate benefit in the solution of a problem with a platform that facilitates the network transformation process and to ensure a better time-to-market in the development of new business opportunities.
