Towards 5G in Healthcare: a path from research to innovation

Head of Project Financing

September 14, 2017 – Today the health sector is characterised by a growing demand for public and private facilities for technologically advanced solutions. The main goal is the control of the explosive growth in health spending all over Europe. The application of ICT to the clinical and personal care context is mandatory to achieve this goal, as well as to increase the accuracy of the diagnosis, to expand the “remotisation” of patients and to improve the quality of their life.

Italtel is active in Italy and in Europe in many research and innovation activities, especially in the 5G & IoT areas. Our current 5G European projects (named SESAME, 5G ESSENCE, 5G CITY and MATILDA), within the H2020 work programme, are contributing to the evolution of our product and solution portfolio. In this regard, it’s worth notice the great importance of the new 5G architectural approach (CRAN & MEC, among many others), as well as the main key requirements (latency, data volume & bandwith coverage) for the new healthcare services.

In addition, recently Italtel has developed a new healthcare solution, called DoctorLINK, an open healthcare platform, delivered as a Managed Service, enabling continuity of care at home, providing constant, reliable and secure dialogue between patients and hospital. DoctorLINK is able to combine bio-data, real-time-communication and health IT infrastructure. Currently, it is able to support use cases like de-hospitalization, chronic diseases care, aged people care, remote check-up, rich bio-data visit and remote treatment accuracy.

The next relevant steps, in cooperation with primary national Communication Service Providers (CSP), will be in the areas of tele-diagnosis and tele-rehabilitation, based on anywhere and anytime approach, allowing remote physical examination even by palpation (examination by touch) through extreme real-time communication, enabled by very low end-to-end latency; as well as in the areas of new monitoring applications, including surveillance of patients remotely in critical situation, enabled by ultra-reliable communications, and (semi-)automatized or personalised treatment reactions, also in terms of notification and warning, depending on patient’s devices.
