Italtel is part of BRAINE

The EU project consortium on intelligent edge computing started in May 2020 and aims at positioning Europe at the forefront in this sector

Milan, June 4, 2020 – Italtel is one of the 27 partners of the BRAINE consortium, a 36-months project that comprises leading vendors, vertical industries, and research institutes and universities from 14 European countries. The project started on 1st May 2020 and it was officially kicked off from 12 to 14 May during a virtual event in Pisa with the participation of all the partners.

In the intention of the participating partners, BRAINE will play a key role in positioning Europe at the forefront of the intelligent Edge Computing field. The project has a total budget of 16.3M€. It receives funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 876967. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and from the National Authorities of Italy, Poland, Nederland, Israel, Ireland, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, and Czech Republic.

The overall aim of BRAINE is to boost the development of an Edge Framework, empowered by AI technologies, capable of processing locally Big Data, supporting security, data privacy and sovereignty.

By lowering the barriers for utilizing edge computing for artificial intelligence applications, BRAINE will open the door for European SMEs to leverage state of the art technologies, driving their development and growth as industry leaders in their sectors.

The outcomes of the project are going to be demonstrated and validated through the deployment of four use cases that will leverage the AI edge computing capability of BRAINE:

  • Healthcare Assisted Living
  • Hyper-connected Smart City
  • Robotics in Factory 4.0
  • Supply chain Industry 4.0.

Italtel will lead and coordinate all the activities related to the definition of the project requirements and KPIs, to the analysis of data sets to be used for the AI/ML processing as well as to the testing and validation of the integrated solution over the proposed four use cases.

Italtel will also contribute to the design, development and integration of the overall system architecture providing a set of virtual machines specifically designed to test the pre-BRAINE and post-BRAINE solution, in order to assess the performance enhancement of the proposed solution in the integration phases.

Furthermore, Italtel will actively participate, together with other partners, in the design and implementation of the Hyper-connected Smart City use case that will be demonstrated in Pisa in the final stage of the project.

The 27 partners are: Italy, (CNIT, Wind Tre, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Italtel), Poland (IS-Wireless), Denmark (Comcores), The Netherlands (HIRO-MicroDatacenters, Eindhoven University of Technology, Helder-ID, Synano), Israel (Mellanox Technologies), Ireland (EMC Information Systems (DELL), University College Cork), Hungary (PCB Design, Budapest University), Germany (NEC Laboratories Europe, Leibniz Universität Hannover, eccenca GmbH, Infineon AG), France (Secure-IC, Sma-rty), Slovakia (IMC- Industrial Management Consult), Bulgaria (VMware Bulgaria), Switzerland (JJcool), Finland (MarshallAI), and Czech Republic (Czech Technical University Prague, Factorio Solutions).
