At Italtel’s offices in Milan, Rome and Palermo, greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 5,703 tonnes of Co2, bringing the multinational company up to the standards required for certification.
Milan, 28 November 2022 – Italtel, a multinational Information & Communication Technology company, announced today that it has received ISO 14064-1 certification thanks to its excellent performance in terms of carbon emissions: in 2021, the greenhouse gas emissions from Italtel’s activities in its Milan, Rome and Palermo offices reached 5,703 tonnes of Co2. The assessment, conducted by the Italian Institute of Quality Mark IMQ, uses a methodology for the design, management and reporting of the emissions inventory and the verification of data referring to a specific period.
ISO 14064-1 certification allows organisations to quantify their GHG emissions in order to implement carbon management policies and communicate their commitment to environmental sustainability to their stakeholders. The methodology used is that of calculation based on the multiplication between the data quantifying the activity and the corresponding ‘Emission Factor’. The calculation of the data in each category was time-consuming and complex, and identified aspects for improvement. Measuring Italtel’s impact on the environment is therefore an opportunity to develop a greater awareness of the effects generated and the need to improve the company’s environmental footprint in the future.
Italtel has long been committed to environmental sustainability. The main challenge, in fact, is to combat climate change and global warming caused primarily by greenhouse gas emissions, also called Greenhouse Gases or GHGs, mainly due to human activities. Italtel’s Italian offices have undergone several energy efficiency measures over the years, leading to an overall reduction in direct and indirect CO2 emissions of more than 37% in the period 2017-2021.
Figures for the first 9 months of 2022 also show a 38% decrease in total direct and indirect emissions in terms of tonnes of Co2 equivalent compared to the first 9 months of 2021. In order to obtain more variables for the evaluation, staff were involved in a survey on transport and commuting.
Italtel’s path towards sustainability also includes the relocation of the headquarters from the historic Settimo Milanese site to Caldera Park in Milan at the beginning of 2022. The new offices have been designed with smaller spaces and rooms, with a view to a reduced flow of staff due to the possibility of hybrid working modes. In addition, now that mobility is increasingly shifting towards electric, the motorisation of the company fleet has been adapted and two EV electric vehicles for car sharing, with charging stations, are available at the Milan headquarters.

“This certification brings credibility and assurance to our GHG reporting and monitoring processes with regard to the Consolidated Sustainability Report that we have published annually since 2019, and helps to enhance our reputation in the market.
The reporting of the Istituto Italiano del Marchio di Qualità (Italian Institute of the Quality Mark) was done according to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, i.e. it considers the impacts of a certain activity along its entire chain, from production to disposal of the elements needed to carry it out.
The analysis identifies the main emissions as those from combustion associated with the natural gas that fuels the thermal plants, those from the use of the company fleet and air conditioning systems, those from the supply of drinking water to the company premises, and emissions from the production of IT equipment and materials used in the conduct of business.
