AMBITIOUS: innovation, data and collaboration for Europe’s digital transformation

The AMBITIOUS – Advanced CoMputing Continuum Solutions for Boosting DigITalization across European RegionS project was launched in a context in which digital transformation is an essential lever for competitiveness and sustainability. It is not only a technological initiative, but a true European ecosystem built to accelerate innovation through collaboration among regions, companies and research centers.

At Italtel, we chose to take part in AMBITIOUS with a clear conviction: the future of digital innovation depends on the ability to integrate data, technologies and skills within a shared framework. The project is a concrete opportunity to build on our experience in digital transformation, data integration and the development of advanced ICT solutions, while also contributing to the creation of new market opportunities at European level.

A European infrastructure for data and innovation

AMBITIOUS aims to advance the state of the art in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G and the Internet of Things, while also promoting inter-regional collaboration and the commercialization of the solutions developed.

At the heart of the project is the creation of an advanced technological infrastructure capable of providing:

• data aggregation and cleansing
• advanced analytics capabilities
• AI-based predictive models
• secure mechanisms for information exchange

This infrastructure is designed to integrate with SMEs’ existing services, enabling innovative features and opening up new paths for commercial exploitation. In other words, data becomes the meeting point between technology and business, turning into tangible value.

Italtel’s role: platforms, data and cooperation

Within AMBITIOUS, Italtel plays a dual strategic role.

On the one hand, we are developing AGORA, a secure and interoperable platform for data sharing. AGORA is conceived as a trusted environment where companies and partners can collaborate effectively, while retaining control over the security, ownership and use of information. This is where our vision of data as a strategic asset takes concrete shape: not only collection, but enhancement and informed sharing.

On the other hand, we coordinate Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation activities. This means ensuring that the project’s results do not remain confined within the consortium, but are disseminated, understood and adopted by a wider audience, fostering real impact on territories and industrial value chains.

Connecting use cases through secure, interoperable data

One of the project’s most tangible elements is represented by the application use cases, which show how the technologies developed can generate real value across different sectors.

In this context, Italtel contributes directly to the use cases in the e-health domain, having developed the platform for managing and securely sharing data.

In healthcare scenarios, data quality, security and governance are critical and require reliable, interoperable solutions. In this case, for example, the entity that processes the data does not coincide with its owner: the information remains the patient’s property, who defines the ways and limits of its use by providing consent and setting access policies within the platform—for instance authorizing consultation of their medical record while requiring anonymization of the most sensitive elements that could make them identifiable.

This paradigm, particularly evident in healthcare, is not exclusive to that sector; it can also arise in industrial environments, public administration and many other contexts.

The AGORA platform was created precisely to address these needs: enabling trusted, secure and controlled data exchange while ensuring privacy, integrity and traceability of information. The use of blockchain makes it possible to ensure transaction immutability and access transparency, creating a digital environment based on trust among all the actors involved.

The goal was to extend this model to the project’s other use cases as well, creating a shared infrastructure able to support multiple application domains. In this way, AGORA becomes the connection point among the various use cases, facilitating data exchange across the entire AMBITIOUS ecosystem and enabling new synergies between different sectors.

This is a fundamental step: turning a technological platform into a true enabler of cross-sector collaboration, where data becomes central to innovation.

Learning and collaboration: the real European value

One of AMBITIOUS’s distinctive features is its collaborative dimension. Working with 28 partners from different European regions means engaging with different approaches, skills and models.

This ongoing exchange has enabled us to learn new methodologies, refine our engagement strategies and improve our ability to develop solutions that are truly user-centered. It is a process of mutual growth that represents one of the project’s main added values.

Naturally, such a broad collaboration also brings challenges. Aligning objectives, managing communication and coordinating activities require continuous effort. However, it is precisely in this complexity that real innovation is built.

Data that connects, innovation that transforms

At Italtel, we are convinced that data is the true enabler of digital transformation and the transition toward more sustainable economic models. AMBITIOUS embodies this vision perfectly: a project in which technology, collaboration and innovation intertwine to generate value.

The future will not be built by isolated individual actors, but by ecosystems capable of sharing knowledge, data and objectives. AMBITIOUS is a decisive step in this direction.
