Cloud SBC and the rise of all-IP communication

January 10, 2017 – Session Border Controllers (SBC) are critical elements for the evolution of communication networks.

The adoption of the SBC in fixed networks was determined by the IP-based interconnection and by the rapid growth in the rollout and adoption of VoIP solution for residential and business voice services.

Now the SBC is a key element for the wireless access, specifically in Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) solutions. The launch of VoLTE and VoWiFi increases network capacity and enables new value-added services such as: video calling, data connection, superior voice call quality, faster call connection, fewer dropped calls. Besides, WebRTC services are going to be adopted introducing innovation and new possibilities for contextual web-based communications.

Consequently, Communication Service Providers need an evolved SBC solution able to provide all the functions for networks interconnection control with the increasing complexity of the new services in IP-based environments. At the same time, the network operators need to apply the cloud computing approach, implementing the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and taking advantage of the possible benefits in terms of flexibility, agility, innovation and lower costs. The radical paradigm shift introduced with the NFV Management and Orchestration framework allows to rapidly deploy new network services and to easily scale them according to the traffic load of the network.

In this evolving scenario, Italtel has realized NetMatch-S Cloud Inside for Service Providers willing to instantiate a full flavour SBC in a NFV environment in order to achieve operational efficiency and business agility.
