Italtel participates in the European ISAC-NEWTON project with a new PhD programme

Italtel strengthens its commitment to next-generation communication technologies by participating in ISAC-NEWTON – Intelligent Sensing and Communication as Training Network for Perceptive Mobile Networks in 6G, a European project funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks programme.

As part of this initiative, we are pleased to welcome Athanasios Nousiou, who has recently started his PhD programme at Italtel, focusing on advanced research topics such as intelligent sensing, metasurfaces and innovative communication schemes for future 6G mobile networks.

Athanasios has already represented Italtel at IEEE WPMC 2025 – 28th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he presented the first outcomes of his research within the project.

Athanasios explains his research

“The goal of the presentation was to analyse the behaviour of a finite-aperture metasurface used for Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) communication schemes. Metasurfaces are expected to play a key role in future wireless systems, while OAM is being explored for new communication paradigms, although its practical implementation remains an open research area.

I introduced key concepts regarding metasurfaces and OAM, then presented the theoretical framework used to model the generation of OAM vortices through a finite-aperture metasurface. Afterwards, simulations were shown to validate the theoretical approach, and I concluded with a summary of the main results and future research directions.”

Our commitment to innovation

At Italtel, we strongly believe in supporting young researchers and fostering collaboration between academia and industry. Through European initiatives such as ISAC-NEWTON, we promote scientific excellence and contribute to the development of technologies that will shape the mobile networks of the future.
