Autonomous networks: the engine transforming TelCos into TechCos

Telecommunication networks are today the nervous system of the digital economy. The exponential growth of data traffic, the increase in digital services, the massive spread of connected devices and the ever-higher expectations of Customers are putting strong pressure on operators’ infrastructures. Added to this scenario are shrinking margins, networks that are increasingly complex to manage, operating models that are still largely manual, and growing competition from cloud-native players and hyperscalers.

In this context, the transformation of TelCos into TechCos is no longer a long-term vision, but a strategic necessity. It means evolving from a model focused solely on connectivity to one based on digital platforms, advanced services and continuous innovation. This leads to a profound rethinking of how TelCos design, manage and evolve their network, data center and cloud infrastructures.

Why TelCos are accelerating toward autonomous networks

Traditional network management models are no longer sufficient to support today’s complexity. Operators need more efficient, resilient and programmable networks. In this scenario, autonomous networks emerge as a concrete and pragmatic response, improving efficiency, service quality and long-term competitive capability.

This transformation is not only technological. It represents a key step in the journey that enables TelCos to become TechCos, capable of managing digital platforms, advanced services, open ecosystems and data-driven models. The operator’s role evolves from connectivity provider to a key player in intelligent and automated networks.

Autonomous networks: what they are and why they matter

An autonomous network goes beyond simple automation. It is a network capable of self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing, making dynamic decisions through AI-based closed-loop control mechanisms. The goal is to ensure continuity, consistency and quality of service, even under unpredictable traffic conditions.

A concrete example: an autonomous network can detect in real time a degradation in quality on a critical service, predict its impact on the end user and automatically rebalance resources before the disruption is perceived. This is a radical evolutionary leap, not a simple technological upgrade.

According to the TM Forum classification, today only 6% of TelCos worldwide have reached advanced levels of autonomy (Level 4), with an industry average of 1.9 out of 5. At the same time, 22% of operators expect to reach high levels within the next three years, confirming that the race to autonomy has already begun.

This gap clearly shows how autonomous networks are set to become a key factor for competitive differentiation in the telco market.

The five pillars of the autonomous network

1. Cloud as the elastic platform of the network

Autonomous Networks require advanced AI to observe, predict and decide in real time. These functions need massive computational power and specialized infrastructures. Cloud represents the enabling infrastructure to scale resources quickly and flexibly, also supporting distributed architectures (e.g. edge cloud, far edge).

2. Artificial intelligence as the decision-making engine

AI makes it possible to analyze large volumes of data in real time, identify patterns, predict anomalies and autonomously trigger corrective actions. Despite its clear value, the adoption of AI in network and IT functions is still limited, leaving ample room for growth.

3. Open APIs and intent-based networking

More advanced TelCos adopt open APIs and intent-based models, in which the operator defines the objective and the network decides how to achieve it. This makes the network programmable, easily integrable with digital applications and ready to support new service models.

4. Data and observability

Data and observability become the new value chain. Agentic AI, capable of perceiving, reasoning and acting autonomously, correlates information from multiple sources and translates it into coordinated actions, supporting complex decision-making processes.

5. Security integrated by design

In autonomous networks, security is native and pervasive. It must be integrated from the architectural design phase, extended to AI-based decision-making processes and supported by continuous visibility mechanisms and adaptive security, capable of preventing and mitigating threats in real time.

The autonomous network implies not only new architectures and technologies, but also a cultural change. Advanced digital skills are required, as well as increasingly close collaboration between people and intelligent systems.

The role of Italtel in the autonomous network journey

In this complex journey, the role of the System Integrator must evolve: it must act as a bridge between strategic vision and the so-called implementation on the ground of a coherent operational solution, orchestrating the end-to-end integration of heterogeneous technologies, from the network to the cloud, from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity.

Italtel is able to support its Customers in the evolution toward autonomous networks thanks to the following distinctive strengths:

  • deep knowledge of the technological domain (networks, data centers, cloud)
