Network evolution for a private healthcare group

CHALLENGE

A fast, reliable and secure infrastructure of communication is both an essential prerequisite for hospitals to provide efficient services and a tool enabling them to deliver innovative services.

A communication infrastructure in the healthcare sector must:

  • allow efficient communication between health professionals, patients, administrators, and third companies
  • be compliant with legislative requirements in the field of privacy and security of patients’ data
  • be available anytime, anywhere
  • allow access to wired and wireless devices
  • convey in a converged data, voice and video
  • transfer and store the vast amount of data generated by health care applications
In this context an important Lombard private health care group, present at a national level, has requested that Italtel analyze, design and implement the evolution of its network.
The Clinical Institute was actually equipped with a network infrastructure with problems associated with the instability of the VLAN, the excessive traffic peaks, the physical flapping toward monitoring systems, and server farms with constant CPU consumptions over 60% with peaks of 90% -100%.

Furthermore, the Institute having many seats (a dozen between hospitals and clinics scattered around various regions), distributed systems and subnets, the addressing plans management was also not homogeneous entailing the duplication of MAC-Addresses on multiple-Port Channels.

A fast, reliable and secure infrastructure of communication to provide efficient and innovative services

SOLUTION

For the reasons above the Clinical Institute has requested to Italtel a picture of the state of the network in order to identify and rectify the existing critical points and study an architectural and technological evolution plan in line with the new requirements.

During the realization of this project, Italtel has provided continuous support through technical assistance. Italtel has planned and executed the network migration, reducing to the minimum the tolerable period of disruption of service and has guaranteed support through training activities agreed with the customer.
Thanks to the Assesment and to an in-depth analysis, different critical issues (instability of the VLAN, traffic extra broadcast/flooding, CPU overload, Single Points of Failure) were analyzed and resolved by taking a prompt intervention on the network, optimizing and separating the services provided on different Ans, implementing redundancy, migrating on new generation devices, consolidating the Front-End between Campus Core and Data Center Core, applying security features within and outside the LAN, extending the Wi-Fi network and implementing the Group's Network Management System.

BENEFITS

to enjoy excellent connectivity experience on the move for all users
to have a network of reliable and secure connection
to simplify management operations of the network

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The new network has been implemented by using today’s latest technologies and selecting the vendor Cisco Systems as partner for the tech supply. In detail, products from the family Catalyst 6807 have been adopted for the core layer, Catalyst 4500-X for the distribution layer and Catalyst 3650 in stack for the access layer.
Features of the new campus network are:

  • Interconnection with new 4k aggregates in access to 20G
  • Interconnection to the new 40G Server Farm
  • Use of VSS and VPC at every level
  • No Layer Loop 2

CONCLUSION

Italtel has provided all the Cisco equipment of new generation (core, access and data center) and its professional services for the detection, radio planning, network design, implementation and maintenance.
The Clinical Institute has expressed appreciation and satisfaction for the work done together.
