WatchEDGE aims to develop new models for environmental and territorial monitoring based on advanced digital architectures, edge computing and artificial intelligence. The project supports ecosystem observation and management through more efficient and intelligent use of data, transforming raw information into operational knowledge that enables informed decision-making.

THE VISION

Turning intelligent networks into data-driven value

WatchEDGE explores how intelligent networks and distributed computing systems can enable a new paradigm in environmental data management. Processing data close to its sources reduces latency, optimizes network resource usage and makes reliable information available in near real time, even in complex and geographically distributed scenarios.

Within WatchEDGE, Italtel provides expertise and solutions for the design and integration of the enabling digital infrastructure. Its contribution spans the entire data chain, from field-level data acquisition to information valorization, ensuring architectural consistency, interoperability and scalability.

Italtel’s contribution focuses on four key elements:

  • Edge-centric architectures, enabling data processing close to the sources, reducing latency and optimizing network resource consumption.

  • Integration of heterogeneous systems, enabling interoperability among sensors, processing platforms and network infrastructures.

FIELD VALIDATION

A Proof of Concept in a real-world environment

A central element of the project is the Integrated On-Field Proof of Concept carried out in the San Rossore Natural Park in Pisa. This experimentation validated the architectural approach in a real and operationally complex environment, demonstrating that an AI- and edge-computing-based monitoring platform can be effectively deployed and managed in rural contexts.

Project results confirm the reliability and operational continuity of the solution, as well as its ability to adapt to dynamic scenarios. WatchEDGE demonstrates the maturity of a modular, interoperable and scalable architecture, outlining a roadmap toward fully operational and reusable solutions.

BEYOND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

A dual-use platform for multiple application scenarios

Although validated in the environmental domain, WatchEDGE adopts a dual-use approach that can be extended to other application contexts, from territorial monitoring and security to industrial and infrastructure scenarios. This strengthens the project’s value as an enabling platform for sustainable digital innovation, focused on efficiency, scalability and responsible use of technological resources.
