Data Center Efficiency & Sustainability: Less Energy, More Value/h1>
How Italtel is transforming its Rozzano Test Plant into a model of energy and operational efficiency, reducing energy consumption, costs and complexity through a structured Infrastructure Optimization approach.
Challenge
Anyone managing an IT infrastructure knows the situation well: over time, servers, network equipment, test environments and new platforms accumulate to meet evolving business requirements. It is a natural evolution—but one that comes with an equally predictable consequence: energy consumption rises, more physical space is required and operating costs increase.
For CIOs and CTOs, the challenge is not simply about controlling costs. It is about improving the efficiency of the entire infrastructure without compromising availability, testing capabilities or business continuity.
Italtel’s Test Plant in Rozzano faced the same challenge: evolving a complex technology environment while maintaining the same levels of service, but with a significantly lower energy and economic impact.
Solution
To address this challenge, Italtel launched an Infrastructure Optimization program as part of a broader set of operational efficiency improvement initiatives.
The approach is being implemented progressively and focuses on:
- consolidating IT infrastructure
- rationalizing technology assets
- optimizing physical space
- reducing energy consumption
- continuously governing resource utilization
The project goes beyond simply replacing technology. It addresses processes, operating practices and the management of the entire asset lifecycle, creating a model for continuous efficiency improvement that can be replicated across different technology environments.
Benefits
The results will demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. By the end of the program, Italtel expects to achieve:
- a reduction in the number of racks from 94 to 72
- more efficient use of available space, resulting in lower facility and rental costs
- a projected 20% reduction in energy consumption in 2026 compared with 2025
Further initiatives are planned to build on these results and extend the positive impact of the program, improving both the operational efficiency of the Test Plant and its overall energy performance.
Beyond the financial metrics, the project demonstrates how intelligent infrastructure management can increase efficiency without reducing operational capacity, while simultaneously improving sustainability, control and resilience.
The value of Italtel
The experience gained through the transformation of its own Test Plant enables Italtel to support enterprises, telecommunications operators and public sector organizations in designing and implementing Data Center Optimization and Infrastructure Modernization programs.
Italtel combines expertise in infrastructure, networking, cloud, automation and operational governance to help organizations:
- reduce energy consumption
- control operating costs
- optimize the utilization of IT assets
- simplify infrastructure management
- achieve ESG and sustainability objectives
- increase efficiency without compromising service reliability and continuity
For IT decision-makers, energy efficiency is no longer just a sustainability initiative. It is a strategic lever for increasing organizational competitiveness, reducing the Total Cost of Ownership and freeing up resources that can be reinvested in innovation.
