Cloud Recovery for an energy operator


A failure in the IT infrastructure can cause a company significant damage to production and significant economic losses. A crucial factor is therefore an effective business strategy to prepare in advance how to manage failures and how to resume business more quickly.

In this context, one of the possible solutions is Disaster Recovery in the cloud.

One of the main independent European operators in the energy and refining sector, in whose business strategy the IT infrastructure is a fundamental factor, has therefore decided to adopt a Disaster Recovery as-a-Service (DRaaS) solution of its own IT infrastructure and entrusted its management to Italtel.


Disaster Recovery in the Cloud, or Cloud DR, is an emergency backup strategy for data, applications and hardware to ensure business continuity by restoring the access and functionality of your IT infrastructure following natural or man-made disastrous events . Unlike traditional approaches, it is based on cloud storage.
In other words, in the event of a failure, affected data, applications and other resources are quickly and easily restored from the cloud. This allows for a quicker resumption of activities.
Thanks to the way the Disaster Recovery function is provided in the “As A Service” formula, Italtel has provided the energy and refining operator with significant cost savings. In fact, the in-house implementation of disaster recovery programs is usually very expensive due to recurring maintenance costs.
With DRaaS, on the other hand, you only pay when the infrastructure is in use.
More precisely, the solution adopted by the oil&gas company is DRaaS on VMware infrastructure on the AWS cloud.


The DRaaS solution combined with the managed services provided by Italtel allow the customer to:

  • focus your IT team on core operations
  • be operational faster and with faster recovery times
  • save money on recovery programs
  • have no responsibility for the protection of the hardware


Italtel provides the management service remotely via VPN access and includes:

  • the functions for monitoring backups, operating parameters and the correct functioning of the system
  • the implementation of replicas, also at the application level, on Virtual Machines turned on and configured on the Disaster Recovery site using native tools of the respective vendors, including Oracle DataGuard, Log Shipping Mechanisms
  • the management of infrastructural changes and related workloads, with a joint strategy with the Customer which includes the feasibility study, planning of the procedures for commissioning and taking charge of the Disaster Recovery site.
