Jean Mantilla: a passion for technology, the strength of perseverance
The origins of a passion
Some passions are born almost by chance, from a phrase heard at just the right moment. For Jean Mantilla, now a Pre-Sales Engineer at Italtel Peru, it all began during his school years, when a family member he particularly admired described Computer and Systems Engineering as “the profession of the future”. Those words sparked a curiosity that, over time, turned into a career built on determination, continuous learning and a strong passion for innovation.
After graduating in Computer and Systems Engineering, Jean began his professional journey. His first work experiences enabled him to acquire practical skills and an increasingly in-depth knowledge of the technology sector. From software development to the management of telecommunications infrastructure, each step helped build the foundations of a career that would later lead him to Italtel.
From professional growth to the pre-Sales role
Jean joined the company in 2013 and has followed a professional path marked by constant evolution. After starting as a post-Sales Engineer, he chose to broaden his professional horizons by moving into pre-Sales, attracted by the opportunity to combine technical expertise with strategic vision.
“I have always been motivated by the opportunity to learn something new,” he says. “In the pre-Sales role, I was able to develop a broader perspective, helping customers identify the solutions best suited to their business goals.”
Today, his work is precisely about creating a bridge between technology and business: understanding customers’ needs, translating them into concrete solutions and supporting them in their digital transformation challenges. This activity requires solid technical skills, but also listening abilities, relationship-building skills and a strong focus on people.
For Jean, every customer represents a new opportunity for growth.
“Every organization has different needs, goals and challenges. Understanding their context means entering a new world, continuously learning and finding innovative ways to generate value.”
This attitude towards learning is one of the elements that has accompanied his entire professional journey. From his first work experiences in Trujillo, his hometown, to his move to Lima in search of more challenging projects, Jean has always seen every change as an opportunity to grow.
A high-visibility challenge: the Pan American Games
Among the most significant moments of his experience at Italtel, one stands out in particular: his contribution to the Lima 2019 Pan American Games project, one of the most important sporting events ever hosted by Peru.
It was a complex, high-visibility initiative with non-negotiable deadlines. During the design phase, many of the facilities were still under construction and the information available was limited, requiring significant coordination, great flexibility and strong problem-solving skills. What made everything even more challenging was the deadline: an international event cannot be postponed, and everything had to be ready and fully operational on time.
“It was one of the most challenging projects of my career, but also one of the most rewarding. Knowing that I contributed to the success of such an important event for the country is a great source of pride.”
Looking ahead to the future of digital infrastructures
Jean is also looking to the future. Among the topics he follows with greatest interest are Software-Defined Networking and Cybersecurity, two areas he considers essential for the evolution of modern digital infrastructures. Automation and centralized network management are profoundly changing the way infrastructures are designed and managed, while cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important in a context shaped by the evolution of artificial intelligence and the growing sophistication of digital threats.
The value of teamwork
But if there is one element Jean considers truly fundamental to the success of projects, it is teamwork.
“Technologies are becoming increasingly complex, and no one can face every challenge alone. The best results are achieved when people with different skills and experiences work together towards a common goal.”
According to him, the pillars of an effective team are mutual trust, open communication and the willingness to share knowledge and experience — values he sees reflected in Italtel’s corporate culture.
“Over the years, I have always been able to count on the support of my colleagues. Knowing that I can ask for help and find people willing to collaborate creates an environment of trust that truly makes a difference.”
Perseverance as a lesson in growth
If he had to summarize in a single lesson what he has learned throughout his career, Jean would choose perseverance. The most difficult challenges, he explains, are often the ones that teach the most. And it is precisely in the most complex moments that the ability to adapt, the desire to improve and the determination to find a solution emerge.
A philosophy he sums up with a phrase that perfectly captures the spirit of Italtel:
“If something is easy, it probably isn’t an Italtel project.”
It is a message he also shares with young people who wish to pursue a path in STEM disciplines: cultivate curiosity, embrace the effort of continuous learning and never stop challenging yourself.
Because technology changes every day, but some qualities always remain decisive: passion, commitment, team spirit and the willingness to keep growing. These are the values that have accompanied Jean throughout his journey and continue to guide him in the challenges of today and tomorrow.
But behind every professional achievement, there is also a story of support and encouragement. Jean believes that none of his accomplishments would have been possible without the support of his family. He is deeply grateful to his parents and his brother, who have always encouraged him to pursue his goals and overcome every challenge along the way.
Today, his daughter is one of his greatest motivations, inspiring him every day to continue learning, growing and striving to be the best version of himself. For Jean, success is never an individual accomplishment, but the result of the people who stand beside us, support us, and believe in us throughout the journey.
