Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima, Peru: Italtel improves passenger connectivity with high-performance network solutions to become one of LATAM’s most modern airports

Challenge

In today’s interconnected world, airports play a crucial role as physical transit hubs and digital gateways facilitating global travel. Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru, serves an average of approximately 11.2 million passengers annually, solidifying its position as one of the busiest airports in South America. To accommodate this growing passenger flow, the airport has undergone numerous expansions and improvements, including the construction of a new terminal with a capacity for over 30 million passengers annually.

Recognizing the need for a robust digital infrastructure, the airport faced challenges related to improving network availability, continuity, security, and overall operational efficiency. A significant upgrade was required to meet the growing demands of both passengers and service providers, ensuring that visitors could easily access essential online services such as flight check-ins and online purchases.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, Italtel Peru was selected as the technological operator for the airport’s next-generation gigabit network and Wi-Fi system. A state-of-the-art infrastructure designed, operated, and managed by Italtel will enhance connectivity throughout the terminal. The new gigabit network will ensure that passengers and over 100 service providers and government entities operating within the airport can enjoy secure and speedy internet access via their devices.

This upgrade facilitates a wide range of online activities, from social media browsing to checking flight information, significantly enhancing the overall passenger experience. By leveraging advanced networking technology, Italtel will ensure that the airport can maintain a continuous flow of information, thus supporting seamless communication between passengers, airport staff, service providers, and government entities.

The technological solution encompasses monitoring, support, administration, and control of the entire LAN, Wi-Fi, and WAN network of the new terminal for eight years, through a Network Operation Center (NOC) equipped with a comprehensive set of tools, processes, trained personnel, and logistics necessary for its continuous operation 24/7/365.

We are extremely proud to contribute to making Lima Airport one of the main hubs in Latin America. This project represents an important step in the growth and innovation of the Peruvian airport sector and strengthens our position among the leading companies in technological innovation
